Founder’s Day is the most significant ceremonial event in the Royal Hospital Chelsea calendar. The holiday is known affectionately as Oak Apple Day in honor of the 1651 Battle of Worcester, where King Charles II famously escaped capture by hiding inside an oak tree.
The military parade commemorates the institution being founded in 1681 as a refuge for veterans “broken by age or war.” The celebration unites centuries of history with the present-day service of around 300 resident British Army veterans, famously known as the Chelsea Pensioners.
